Oh Yeh? Well, My Dad Can Save More Than Your Dad!

In my never ending quest to save money and get our grocery bill down as low as possible; I will be trying a new grocery tonight.  And keeping my fingers crossed.

My father has been shopping at Aldi's for several years.  And tells me often how I should go try it out.  But for whatever reason, every time he brings it up, the 14 year old girl in me rises up.  "Uh... if my Dad shops there, I'm sure not going do.  Lame..."  (yeh, she's a rude little snot)   And in true 14 year old girl fashion - it took a friend mentioning the same store to me and telling me how good the prices were on produce (quality produce too) for me to take a deeper look.

When I saw the advertised price on some of the produce and other items - I was sold!

Granted, a few things will take some getting used to.  You have to insert a quarter to get a shopping cart - but you get it back when you return the cart.  And you have to bring your own bags or pay for them.  But I have about a bazillion reusable bags I can use.

So, this week the Man of the House and I are going to give it a chance.  And if my dad asks - it's because of his glowing reviews.

  1. That is a really cool idea on the shopping carts, I watched a man put his cart in the flowers instead of walking seriously 5 feet to put it in the stall ">" Good luck shopping and wink i will make sure dear old dad knows it was all his idea for you to shop there haha.

    1. Thanks. Wasn't as productive as I had hoped, but I'll go back a few more times to give it a fair chance.

  2. Aldi has some really good deals, but they sometimes don't have the best of some other things depending on the location and the day you go in. I have found that I don't really like the "fresh" meat and sometimes the produce isn't good in one location. But in another location, it is fine.

My mother used to shop there when I was a kid... back before they even had scanners for the items and had to type in the price by hand. Back then (and even still) some of their generic cereals were better than the "real" thing!

    1. I haven't tried the meats. And I've heard that sometimes the selection on things isn't great depening on the day you go. I'll have to try the cereals. The Little Man can go through cereal like crazy - he eats it for breakfast, snacks, and sometimes dinner!

  3. Oh yeah .. we shop at places with the little "quarter for a cart" deal .. put you always get it back, and if you're lucky, you sometimes find an abandoned shopping cart at the parking lot instead and get a quarter .. (:

  4. I used to shop at Aldi's more when my kids were at home. It's been a few years, but the items I found most worth it were the cereals, peanut butter, some fresh produce (hit or miss on what they have that looks good) and the loaf bread. My kids could plow through some bread so I would buy 10-20 loaves at a time and put them in the freezer. They just pulled them out as they needed them. I've been told that their milk prices are good, but since my Aldi's was in the town I work in, which is an hour away from where I live, I never bought anything that had to be refridgerated or frozen.

    1. I keep hearing about the cereal. Will have to try it. The prices on the milk were pretty good compared with where we usually shop. Thanks for sharing your experience Susan!
